Sharjah Art Foundation

PenguinCube developed a modular and minimal wayfinding and signage system for Sharjah Art Foundation in Sharjah, UAE, designed to integrate seamlessly with the institution’s heritage architecture and existing urban fabric. The project focused on creating a clear and cohesive navigation system that could support visitors across a collection of historic buildings and contemporary cultural spaces without competing with their architectural character.

The wayfinding strategy was developed to respond to the distinctive context of Sharjah Art Foundation, where contemporary art and cultural programming take place within restored heritage buildings. PenguinCube created a restrained visual language that allows permanent signage to sit naturally within the existing architecture, maintaining clarity and consistency while preserving the character of the surrounding spaces.

A modular approach allows the signage system to adapt across different buildings, entrances, routes and visitor touchpoints. Rather than introducing a visually dominant identity, the system uses carefully considered typography, placement and proportions to provide intuitive navigation while maintaining a quiet presence within the heritage environment.

The resulting wayfinding system creates continuity across the Sharjah Art Foundation campus while respecting the architectural and historical qualities of the site. The project demonstrates PenguinCube’s approach to contextual wayfinding design, combining functional signage and spatial communication with sensitive integration into heritage and cultural environments.
