AlBalad Historic District

PenguinCube developed a comprehensive masterplan-level wayfinding strategy and signage design for AlBalad Historic District in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the Ministry of Culture. As Jeddah’s UNESCO-designated historic nucleus, AlBalad presents a unique urban environment where heritage architecture, cultural destinations, public spaces and contemporary visitor experiences converge. The project was conceived to establish a wayfinding framework capable of serving the district as it evolves over the next 50 years.

The strategy focused on creating a cohesive approach to navigation across the historic district, addressing the scale and complexity of an evolving urban environment rather than a single site or destination. PenguinCube considered how visitors move between streets, heritage buildings, public spaces and cultural destinations, developing a system that supports orientation while remaining sensitive to the architectural and historic character of AlBalad.

At the masterplan level, the signage strategy establishes a clear set of design principles and standards that can be applied consistently across the district. The framework provides a foundation for future signage and wayfinding interventions, allowing new destinations and developments to integrate into an established spatial communication system while maintaining the distinctive identity of the historic neighbourhood.

The resulting wayfinding strategy creates a long-term framework for navigation and spatial communication across AlBalad. By balancing intuitive visitor experience with the preservation of a significant heritage environment, PenguinCube developed a scalable signage system designed to support Jeddah’s historic district through its continued cultural, civic and urban transformation.
