Shindagha Historic District

PenguinCube developed the wayfinding strategy and signage design for Dubai’s Shindagha Historic District, a major heritage destination within one of the city’s most historically significant areas. The brief focused on creating an intuitive visitor navigation system across the district’s interconnected streets, Siqqas and cultural attractions while responding sensitively to its historic architecture and Emirati identity. The system needed to make the district easy to understand and navigate without competing with its distinctive heritage character.

PenguinCube approached the project by establishing a clear wayfinding hierarchy to help visitors orient themselves and navigate between different areas of the Historic District. Colour-coded zones were introduced based on the themes of the district’s traditional houses, creating a visual system that allows visitors to identify different areas and understand their location within the wider destination. This approach combines wayfinding strategy with cultural interpretation, using colour and information design to make navigation more intuitive while strengthening the connection between the visitor experience and the district’s architectural heritage.

The resulting signage system integrates directional, identification and information elements throughout the Siqqas. Contemporary signage is carefully incorporated into metal structures, creating a consistent visual language that provides essential visitor information while remaining sensitive to the surrounding historic environment. The colour-coded system supports intuitive navigation across the heritage destination, helping visitors move between cultural attractions and public spaces while maintaining a cohesive relationship between signage, architecture and the wider identity of Shindagha.

The project extends across the public realm of Shindagha Historic District, requiring a wayfinding system capable of supporting visitors across multiple routes, buildings and cultural destinations. PenguinCube’s work brings together wayfinding strategy, signage design, information design and environmental communication to create a navigation experience suited to a complex heritage environment. Developed in collaboration with Dubai Municipality, the system balances the practical requirements of visitor navigation with the preservation of Shindagha’s historic character and cultural identity.
