Al Mugheirah Mangrove Walk

PenguinCube developed a bespoke wayfinding and interpretive signage system for Al Mugheirah Mangrove Walk in Abu Dhabi, an ecotourism and public realm destination developed for MODON in collaboration with GHD Group. The project focused on creating an intuitive visitor experience within a sensitive natural environment, helping people navigate the mangrove landscape while encouraging greater awareness and appreciation of its ecological character.

The wayfinding strategy was designed around the natural movement of visitors through the mangrove walk, providing clear directional information and orientation points without competing with the surrounding landscape. PenguinCube considered how signage could support different stages of the visitor journey, from arrival and orientation through to exploration and interpretation, creating a cohesive system across the public realm.

Interpretive signage forms an important part of the experience, introducing visitors to the mangrove environment and helping communicate the significance of the surrounding ecosystem. Rather than treating information and navigation as separate elements, the system brings wayfinding and interpretation together to create a more meaningful connection between visitors and the natural landscape.

The resulting signage system demonstrates PenguinCube’s human-centred approach to wayfinding design in ecologically sensitive environments. In collaboration with GHD Group, the team developed a public realm communication system that balances intuitive navigation, environmental interpretation and ecological preservation, creating a considered visitor experience for Al Mugheirah Mangrove Walk and supporting Abu Dhabi’s growing ecotourism landscape.
