PenguinCube developed the wayfinding design for the Royal Diriyah Opera House in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with Snøhetta. As part of the wider Diriyah Gate development, the project called for an intuitive navigation system for a major new cultural destination, guiding visitors across interconnected buildings, public spaces and performance venues. The brief was to create clear and cohesive visitor navigation while ensuring that the wayfinding experience complemented the architectural vision and cultural character of the Opera House.
PenguinCube’s approach focused on developing a wayfinding strategy that responds to the complex movement patterns of a large-scale cultural venue. The system considers the complete visitor journey, from arrival and orientation through to destination identification and movement between spaces. Directional, identification and information signage were structured to provide clear navigation across shaded passages, landscaped gardens and interconnected public areas, creating a consistent experience while responding to the distinct character of the Opera House and its surroundings.
The resulting signage and information design integrates seamlessly with the contemporary architectural environment while drawing on the cultural identity of Diriyah and its Najdi-inspired heritage. Signage elements are carefully positioned to provide essential information without overwhelming the architecture, while a considered visual hierarchy helps visitors understand routes, destinations and key points of orientation. The wayfinding system therefore functions as both practical navigation infrastructure and an important part of the wider visitor experience.
Spanning approximately 46,000 square metres, the Royal Diriyah Opera House comprises multiple performance and public spaces, including a 2,000-seat theatre, two multipurpose theatres and a 450-seat rooftop amphitheatre. PenguinCube’s wayfinding design supports navigation across this diverse environment, bringing together wayfinding strategy, signage design and information design at an architectural and public-realm scale. The project is delivered in collaboration with Snøhetta, integrating PenguinCube’s expertise in environmental communication and visitor navigation with the wider architectural vision for the Opera House.
