PenguinCube developed the wayfinding strategy and signage design for Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa in collaboration with Aperture Design Studio. Set within the natural landscape of Liwa, the project called for a navigation system that could support visitors across the destination while remaining sensitive to its distinctive desert environment. The brief focused on creating clear and intuitive wayfinding that would feel integrated into the experience rather than competing with the surrounding landscape.
PenguinCube approached the project with a restrained and serene design language, using wayfinding as an extension of the destination’s natural character. The strategy focused on clear information hierarchy and considered placement, allowing directional and identification signage to guide visitors intuitively while maintaining a sense of calm. Rather than introducing visually dominant elements, the system was designed to sit comfortably within the landscape and complement the architectural and hospitality experience.
The resulting signage system makes use of natural materials including copper and stone, creating tactile wayfinding elements that blend naturally with the surrounding environment. Material selection, form and placement were carefully considered to create signage that feels cohesive with the desert setting while providing essential visitor information. The restrained approach allows the landscape to remain the dominant visual experience, with signage acting as subtle markers that assist orientation and movement throughout the destination.
Across Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa, PenguinCube’s wayfinding and signage design supports the visitor journey through a destination defined by its natural surroundings. The project brings together wayfinding strategy, signage design, information design and environmental communication to create a cohesive navigation experience that is both functional and contextually sensitive. Developed in collaboration with Aperture Design Studio, the system demonstrates how carefully considered materials and understated signage can integrate wayfinding seamlessly into a hospitality environment and its surrounding landscape.
