Alserkal Avenue

PenguinCube developed the wayfinding strategy and signage design for Alserkal Avenue, the heart and catalyst of the regeneration of Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial district. As the cultural hub expanded to nearly twice its previous size, the brief was to create a seamless navigation system that could connect its growing network of galleries, creative spaces, studios and public destinations. The challenge was to make an evolving industrial environment easy to navigate while establishing a distinctive visual identity that could become an integral part of the Alserkal Avenue experience.

PenguinCube approached the project by creating a unified wayfinding system that responds to the character of Al Quoz while giving the expanding cultural district a strong and recognisable identity. The strategy considered how visitors arrive, orient themselves and move between destinations across the masterplan, establishing a consistent hierarchy for directional, identification and information signage. The system needed to feel cohesive across the expanded site while remaining flexible enough to respond to the different buildings, spaces and creative uses that make up the district.

The resulting wayfinding and signage system combines bold visual forms with clear information design, creating signage that is both functional and highly recognisable. Iconic wayfinding elements act as visual landmarks throughout the district, helping visitors locate key destinations while reinforcing Alserkal Avenue’s identity. Rather than functioning solely as directional infrastructure, the signage became an active part of the cultural destination’s brand language, contributing to the transformation and revitalisation of the wider industrial district.

The project was delivered at the scale of an expanded cultural masterplan, with the wayfinding system extending across the enlarged Alserkal Avenue campus and connecting its diverse destinations and public spaces. The work brought together wayfinding strategy, signage design, information design and brand identity to create a cohesive visitor experience across the site. PenguinCube’s approach was recognised with a Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) Honor Award, acknowledging the project’s contribution to experiential graphic design and its successful integration of navigation, identity and place.
